Tal ia and Mendark stood at the rail, watching the sun rise. Neither had had more than an hour's sleep. 'I forgot to mention that there were three boats flying Yggur's flag when I left Ganport,' she said in a low voice.

'And how many others unmarked? Pender!'

Pender appeared at the bow, where he had been inspecting the timbers. Only his eyes were visible over a huge mug of soup which he sipped as he walked.

'Hardly damaged at al ,' he said. 'What a wonderful boat!'

'You said there was a problem with our supplies,' Mendark began. 'I had been thinking that we should go by Ganport, but...'

Pender shook his head. 'Is a big problem. I have no spare sails, rope, spars or nails; no tools; no food but the fresh. The merchants of Ganport are cheats and liars - even the barrels of water were foul.' He swung around to Tal ia. 'I told you that she was trouble, this boat. Now see where we are.'

'And maybe you stil have enemies in Ganport.'

Pender looked sulky. 'They hate outsiders, for al that they live by trade.'

'The fault does not matter,' said Mendark hurriedly. 'Can these things be replaced elsewhere?'

'Problem is the sails,' said Pender, slouching against the rail to slurp the last of his soup. 'The ones we have are old, eh, and we have no spare canvas at al . If one tears, we're crippled.'

'It may be better to risk it here,' Mendark decided. 'Yes, get what you can today, while they stil don't know that I have this boat. Once word gets back from the camp there wil be no haven for us in the Sea of Thurkad. Tal ia, go with Pender and make sure that we get everything we need today. We must be gone no later than the mid-afternoon. Do whatever is necessary.'
